TV. TONIGHT.

HBO. 8PM. That is all.

NEW MUSIC 9.25.07 (WHY MOLLY IS GOING TO KILL ME)

MESHELL NDEGEOCELLO * THE WORLD HAS MADE ME THE MAN OF MY DREAMS
I've always admired Meshell ever since the cover to COOKIE: THE MIXTAPE inspired me to pick it up and give it a listen. (It's a monkey!!! Wearing headphones!!!) I haven't listened to this one enough to give a general idea of if I like it or not. But I imagine it's going to be the perfect music to have on in the background while I'm shading my comics or just tripping out on acid. (kidding! I'm totally into smack now!)

GOIN' HOME * TRIBUTE TO FATS DOMINO
I had no idea the amount of awesome songs Fats gave us until I picked up this double disc set today. Blueberry Hill...sure, but My Blue Heaven? I love that song! I Hear You Knockin?! Maybe I'm just an idiot. Anyway, this poor bastard was IN New Orleans when Katrina hit and this album is helping raise money not for him, but his favorite charities. (It's better than that shitty Darfur collection, so there!)

IRON & WINE * THE SHEPHERD'S DOG
Very quiet, very sweet, very much a perfect way to spend a cloudy day like today. If you've only heard Iron & Wine on that M&M commercial, buy this album and sit with the "cool kids" at lunch.

STEVE EARLE * WASHINGTON SQUARE SERENADE
Not as loud or political as his last studio offerings were, but the lyrics are still there and are as powerful as ever. Plus, the man knows how to write some really beautiful love songs! He's also going to play a larger role on next year's final season of HBO's THE WIRE, so they tossed his cover of Tom Waits "Way Down In The Whole" on here since it also serves as the theme song.

NELLIE MCKAY * OBLIGATORY VILLAGERS
Already downloaded some of these tracks before picking it up today. It's a quick, (under half an hour) weird mash of songs, poetry, and just lots of different musical stylings. Oh, and it's damn good!!!

JOSE GONZALEZ * IN OUR NATURE
This is for those of you who think Iron & Wine are too uplifting and not mellow enough. Jose released an amazing album last year (one of my top-ten picks!) and as soon as I find a record store that actually got it in today, I'm sure I'll love this one just as much!

KT TUNSTALL * DRASTIC FANTASTIC
Picked this up mostly for Molly, but dammit if it ain't catchy. Like Norah Jones, probably not the best way to look "manly" with having this in your musical collection, but who the fuck cares. It's not like she's James Blunt.

EDDIE VEDDER * INTO THE WILD SOUNDTRACK
Wish it was longer, (only about a half hour) but it never wastes a second. Only makes me want to see the movie even more and makes me wonder why more artists don't use ukuleles?!

GIULIANI AND 9-11 SITTING IN A TREE...

Seriously, it's getting disgusting now...

Giuliani party seeks $9.11 per person

WASHINGTON - A supporter of Rudy Giuliani's is throwing a party that aims to raise $9.11 per person for the Republican's presidential campaign.

Abraham Sofaer is having a fundraiser at his Palo Alto, Calif., home on Wednesday, when Giuliani backers across the country are participating in the campaign's national house party night.

INTO THE WILD

Haven't read the book or had a chance to see the movie yet, but the soundtrack to Sean Penn's latest film, Into The Wild, has Eddie Vedder composing the entire soundtrack. Entertainment Weekly caught up with him in New York on his way to the Toronto Film Festival and the interview is quite interesting...

As a parent, it's gotta be hard to see Into the Wild — watching this kid turn his back on his family.
I think parents will learn a lot from this. I think even if they haven't done anything wrong...yet...it's gonna have a profound effect. It's hard to get through a kid's life without f---ing them up. And no matter how good you are, at some point your kids are gonna have to create their own independence and think that Mom and Dad aren't cool, just to establish themselves. That's what adolescence is about. They're gonna go through that no matter what. And I think that'll be an interesting time. I'm thinking about it myself. [Chuckles] These are troubled times, too. Do you force your kids to pay attention to what's going on, or do you let them live their lives outside of it? My hope is that my child is a strong activist. That would make me most proud.

What if she rebels against your liberal politics and becomes a neo-con?
[Laughs] Aaaah... I don't think so. I really don't. Just knowing her now? It would be shocking. It's certainly not in her nature now. She's 3 years old — that's like the height of liberalism. Liberalism comes naturally.

WHAT TO WATCH ON SUNDAY EVENING!!!

Instead of falling into the trap of "maybe this year it won't suck donkey nuts?!" and watching the VMA's, why not watch something that will enlighten (and frighten) you down to your soul.

ALIVE DAY MEMORIES:
HOME FROM IRAQ

Sure, it ain't got Timbaland, (He's hosting the VMA's?! Was Carrot Top busy?!) but it will give you a sense of the toll this war is taking on our soldiers.

GOOD THING THEY SPENT $140 MILLION ON SECURITY...

When a comedy group dressed like Osama can get within ten meters of President Bush!

You got to give it to these guys...balls of steel. They're insanely lucky no one got shot!

NEW MUSIC (UP TO DATE)

I've been lazy as a mofo lately and thus haven't followed up on my weekly musical purchases...but with yesterday being a holiday and today not seeing shit at the record store (for the first time in over a couple months) I figured today would be a good day to recap some of the latest albums I've picked up...

Head over to The Hype Machine and give some of these songs a listen.

AGAINST ME! * NEW WAVE

This is the lil' album that could. I love these guys, they're pop-punk without being Blink 182 or Fall Out Boy or any of that shit. There's no screaming for the sake of screaming and their lyrics are just as awesome as their melodies. Mark my words, this album will catch on with plenty of people before the end of the year and turn up on numerous "Best Of" lists!
(Must listen: Thrash Unreal)

PEARL JAM * LIVE AT THE GORGE

For a band that's stuck around for 17 years, they sure still sound fresh and exciting! This 7-disc set from three concerts (over two years) is amazing. They rarely perform the same song twice and belt out old forgotten classics like Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing" and Victoria Williams' "Crazy Mary" like they did back in the early 90's!
(Must listen: Hail Hail)

PATTON OSWALT * WEREWOLVES & LOLLIPOPS

Easily one of the funniest comedy albums in recent memory. You haven't lived until you've heard him go off on a heckler for ten minutes straight, using the phrase "You fucking Douche Nozzle" repeatedly!
(Must listen: I Tell A Story About Birth Control And Deal With A Retarded Heckler)

THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS * THE ELSE

One of their stronger outings musically in quite some time. Their kids albums are okay, but here they shine. Plus, if you bought the album when it first came out, you got a free 30 song "EP" as well for FREE!!!
(Must listen: The Cap'M)

SPOON * GA GA GA GA GA

Best album of the year, thus far. (yeah, I know I've said that about three times this year, shut it) If you don't already own this album, you're missing out. 10 tracks, half and hour of music, not a second of it wasted. Perfection.
(Must listen: Don't You Evah)

RILO KILEY * UNDER THE BLACKLIGHT

Their catchiest album to date and man, is Jenny Lewis needing sex bad enough that she willing to pay for it?! Plenty songs about sex on here and plenty of catchy hooks and dancing and hand-claps to boot! This album will bring a smile to your face...then make you want a cigarette.
(Must listen: Silver Lining)

PAUL ANKA * CLASSIC SONGS, MY WAY

Laugh all you want (especially you, Jamie) but he does some amazing Vegas-style covers of songs you wouldn't expect to work out that well. Case in point, The Killers?!
(Must listen: Mr. Brightside)

LYLE LOVETT * IT'S NOT BIG, IT'S LARGE

Really nice, relaxing album. I enjoy more of the "Lyle" rather than the "Large Band." Luckily, there's plenty of him just finding his way through love and loss and creating a sound that is uniquely his own.
(Must listen: No Big Deal)

BEN HARPER * LIFELINE

Another short album that isn't missing a single note. Recorded in seven days in Paris right after getting finished with a nine month European tour, they recorded the entire album on analog...no Pro Tools or computers or anything. The sound they created takes you back to old Otis Redding and Sam Cooke...songs about longing for a woman's touch and dealing with being away from the one you love. I cannot recommend this album enough.
(Must listen: Needed You Tonight)
