YES. WE. CAN.

Obama 55%

Edwards 18%

Remember this night.

MICHAEL CLAYTON

It was just nominated for seven Academy Awards. It's back in theaters. You owe it to yourself to see filmmaking at its finest. This was my absolute choice for "Best Film of the Year" and nothing else really comes close. (I've yet to see There Will Be Blood yet, though.)

Fuck Cloverfield. Fuck Rambo. This is a film that doesn't insult your intelligence, makes you see the world from a whole new perspective, and lingers in your mind long after you've left the theater.

YOU KNOW WHAT DOESN'T HELP MY ANXIETY?!

Seeing graphics like this all over the internet:

I know, "Wow Travis, he dies and let's focus on how that makes YOU feel." But it's so sad and tragic to see the years "1979-2008" all over the place. The fact that he was only 28, that he had so much life left to live...it just kicks my anxiety into high gear.

I'm sure the fact that both of my parents are dead has an effect on me, but I constantly used to worry about dying so early, so suddenly. And lately, I haven't felt that. I've felt better than I have in a long while. I have so much to live for.

...but this just makes me realize how short life can be. A reminder of how lucky we all are.

But luckily, there's plenty of assholes that help take my anxiety and turn it into anger. John Gibson from Fox News ought to lose his damn job. I mean, we expect shit like this from Fred Phelps...but John, you should be ashamed of yourself.

DA' OSCARS!!!

Were annouced this morning. I'll give them major props for including Michael Clayton in the Motion Picture of the Year category, and giving Tommy Lee Jones his due for a film that no one (except me and my wife) actually saw!

...but ahem...

Fuck SURF'S UP. Seriously.

1.19.2008

JOHN, IT'S BEEN FUN...

...but seriously, leave it up to the real candidates now. You couldn't even muster double digits in Nevada?!

No poll shows you actually WINNING a primary. You can't somehow become the President when you keep finishing up third. It's just not going to happen, sorry. You're nice, you have a great message, but right now you're reminding me of Ralph Nader. I fell for that once, this time I want to get behind someone who really has a chance of winning. And it ain't you.

Listen, Edwards supporters, I know it really sucks. But there comes a time when you have to realize that there is a bigger issue at stake here, and it's NOT LETTING HILLARY BECOME OUR NOMINEE. Why? Because half the country already hates her and because of shit like this. Sure, there's no "proof" anyone in her camp had anything to do with that, but with the other tactics her campaign has pulled in the last couple weeks, the doubt is there. SHE put it there. Bill Clinton has lost any "support" I had for the man, playing such a huge role in her campaign.

Did we ever see George H W Bush come out yelling at people when his son was getting beat on? Bill, you're a former PRESIDENT. Calm the fuck down and shut your mouth. Things like this are desperate, especially when you end up winning.

...sorry. I'm just so tired of getting my hopes up of a real candidate of change being able to come along and get this country back on track...only to watch the "machine" chew them up and spit them out.

Here's the latest response from the Obama campaign:

OBAMA CAMPAIGN: The Clintons and the Discredited Caucus

FR: David Plouffe, Obama Campaign Manager

RE: The Clintons and the Discredited Caucus

Barack Obama is very proud of the effort that he and his campaign have made in Nevada. As people head to their Caucus sites this morning, we have closed over a 25-point gap in a state where Hillary Clinton was the choice of much of the political establishment and enjoyed huge advantages in terms of name identification. In a very short period of time, our campaign has built an amazing grassroots network and has brought thousands of Independents and disillusioned Republicans into the Democratic Party. These efforts will go a long way to ensuring that Senator Obama wins this critical swing state when he is the nominee.

We expect to do well today and a win in Nevada for Obama would be a significant upset. As University of Nevada Reno Political Science professor put it – “If she loses Nevada, it’s not just a loss. It’s a collapse.”

Our hope is that today’s caucus comes off without a hitch and as many people as possible participate, however we remain concerned that the tactics of the Clinton Campaign and their allies in recent days have confused voters and could lower participation.

And now, according to Jon Ralston, allies of the Clinton Campaign may be planning to challenge voters at the at-large precincts. It is a sad day when Democrats start trying to suppress the vote of other Democrats.

Beginning with the lawsuit filed by their allies to suppress turnout among union members, the Clinton Campaign has been engaged in a systematic effort to discredit the process – a process which was pushed, developed, and approved by their supporters at the Democratic National Committee and in Nevada. It wasn’t until Obama began gaining strength in a state they expected to win by at least 20 points that they began their attempts to delegitimize the process.

Former President Clinton said that this caucus “was not like an election” and that it disenfranchised voters. Even though the lawsuit was rejected as completely meritless by a federal judge, we remain concerned that the specter of the lawsuit has confused voters and threatens turnout at the at-large precincts, which may have been the intent of the Clinton allies all along.

The Clinton Campaign has also repeated the efforts it made in the closing days of the New Hampshire primary by launching knowingly false attacks on Barack’s opposition to Yucca, his 100-percent pro-choice rating, and position on Social Security. There have been push polls and robocalls pushing these false attacks.

And just last night, former President Clinton made two false and outrageous allegations, distorting a radio ad that does not even mention Senator Clinton and accusing the Culinary workers, whose support both Clintons furiously sought, of engaging in deliberate voter suppression.

The conduct of the Clinton Campaign in recent weeks essentially makes the case for why we need Barack Obama – it’s the same old-style say anything or do anything to win, divisive attacks that have prevented progress in this country for so long.

WITH ALL THE BAD SHIT GOING ON...

...ain't it comforting to know that America still hates George W. Bush?! I mean, the man is two months away from beating Harry Truman's record of 38 straight months of being below 50% approval! That takes some serious skillz, yo!!!

He's starting 2008 off with his FIRST EVER trip to Israel and his brand new low of 32% approval rating. People hate this man, 3 to 1. 77% say that this country is headed in the wrong direction. And even though the surge is going "super duper awesome," 64% say that Iraq is not worth it. That's got to hurt.

Well, maybe it would if he wasn't too busy acting like a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle...

WHY DO I SUCK SO MUCH?!

I used to be able to keep up with this blog on a somewhat regular basis, and lately, I just toss up youtube videos or lots of giant photos and "best of" lists to take up space and make it appear like I'm actually blogging.

The problem is that I just kind of do them spur-of-the-moment and end up forgetting a few and then not having the energy to go back and fix the original post (or even add words to explain what I liked about certain films.) So without further ado, here's two movies that I reeeeeeeeeeeeeally loved, but for whatever reason, blanked out on remembering to include them on my "Top Ten Movies of the Year" list:

IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH

Another strong performance from Tommy Lee Jones in a film that NO ONE saw. I think it ended up making like $6 Million in the box office. Which is a shame, because it wasn't just an "anti-war movie" but a pretty important murder-mystery about what happens to our soldiers when they come back home and can't leave the war in the desert.

ZODIAC

Such an amazing film, but one that came out so early in the year and one that was underestimated and underappreciated film, that it totally fell off the radar for a lot of people. (Myself included.) Not like anything David Fincher has ever done before, and a movie that felt as if it came straight out of the 1970's. It was flawless, it sucked you in and it made murder feel raw and dramatic in a way that CSI makes it feel fun and flashy. I'm trying to think if you actually "see" anyone die or even get stabbed or shot. If memory serves correctly, it all happens off-camera. But, and this is how brilliant it is and how torture-porn like SAW should take notes, I felt sick to my stomach and wanted to look away from the screen during the murder scenes. Much like NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, there were no joy in these killings. You never "root" for the bad guy. It's much too real to be "enjoyed."
